Not The Newest Trend
Eating more to weigh less sounds like the latest diet that everybody been gushing about. Lots of money is made by people offering variations of fad diets promising people the ability to eat as much junk as they want and still lose weight. The truth about these diets is they fall under the old saying of "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
Eating more to lose weight is not about literally increasing the amount of food you eat. The reason this isn't a trendy idea is because it's about eating less overall by eating more frequently. The average person eats three meals a day. Some people's way to lose weight is by skipping their breakfast and just eat two meals per day.
Not eating breakfast is a major no-no. Eating when you get up is vital for snapping your body out of the altered state it enters while you sleep. It's also important for giving you energy to get through the day.
The reason almost everyone succumbs to pigging out and eating far more than they need is because they let their blood sugar fall. This leads to the hunger and cravings you likely know all too well. These cravings eventually reach the point where you give up and chow down on something convenient. Convenient food is usually high in calories and not great for your body.
Eating more often keeps your blood sugar stable. Not letting your body have any cravings will make it easier to avoid eating more than you need for the whole day.
Space It Out
Your ideal day should begin with breakfast right when you wake up. The rest of your day should involve eating every 3 to 4 hours. This means you will eat 6 times over the course of a day.
If you're like most people, eating six times a day sounds like a lot. There are two reasons it's not. The first is 3 of these times are the equivalent of snacks. This means you don't have to worry about sitting down to a full meal six times a day. The other reason is your three actual meals will have smaller portions.
Master Portions
Understanding portions is the key to getting the most from this approach to food. Eating six times a day isn't going to help you if you're consuming too many calories at each meal.
Maybe for you, there is no way that you'll ever be full with a meal that only has 300-400 calories. The first reason this is possible is because it only has to keep you full for a few hours. You don't have to go without food from 7AM to 1PM. You'll follow up breakfast by eating at 10AM.
The other way you can make this work is choosing foods that are more filling. Highly processed carbs will not help you feel full. You can eat 400 calories worth of Doritos and feel like it was nothing. More foods that are naturally high in protein, fiber or low GI carbs will remove that hungry feeling. A snack that only has 150 calories can keep you filled between breakfast and lunch because it has 35% of your daily recommended fiber.
